NegaSoft Corporation City Limits Tokyo Japan 4 June 15:33 PM: This is the campus of a large electronics/software company. All the buildings, consisting of offices and laboratories, look sleek and high-tech. However, smoke is rising from fires raging inside the complex. General Parvo's forces are raiding the corporation. Cano-mutants are busy stealing prototypes, computers and other expensive electronics while keeping both the company's security teams and the Tokyo police at bay. Standing by Parvo's Bulldog ship is Groomer and Parvo himself. He is watching with satis- faction as his mutants load their ill-gotten gains onto his vessel. Parvo:"Ah, excellent. Excellent! Load all that lovely goodies onto Santa's sleigh. He he he." Groomer:"We're proceeding well, my General. Our cargo holds will soon be full." Parvo:"Wonderful news! Our raid is going great." Parvo makes a mocking gesture of looking around. Parvo:"And look! Not a single Road Rover in sight. I do wonder where they went." Groomer also makes the same gesture. Groomer:"Oh I wonder myself, my General. They certainly didn't have their funding cut by the United Nations, have they?" Both of them begin laughing while the cano-mutants continue the smash-and-grab operation at the corporation. Business District Los Angeles State of California United States of America 5 June 8:02 AM: This is the financial heart of the city of Los Angeles. On an average day the streets would be packed with cars and the sidewalks teeming with pedestrians. But this morning everyone is fleeing in panic while the streets are instead full of LAPD officers and National Guard forces. Police, military and news chopper circle in the air above one of the city's big banks, where Flea, Tick and Mange are busy attacking. Mange is using its acidic tentacles to melt a way into the bank's vault. Tick is charging like a bull into a National Guard APC, smashing into it and plouging it into a store. The APC explodes, but Tick emerges unharmed and already charging for a column of soldiers. Flea is picking up LAPD squad cars and tossing them around like toys while the police officers fire at him. Their pistols and shotguns do nothing to stop the rampaging insect. Amid all this chaos, the trio's creator, Professor Eugene Atwater, is standing by a big flatbed truck. On the back of the truck are hundreds of money bags stolen from other banks in the area. Atwater is reading a magazine called "EVIL LABS TODAY", focusing on a catalogue inside. Atwater:"Let's see... Hmmmm. Volcano laboratory, complete with your own face carved on the side of the mountain... nah, too hot... How about, underwater base. Stands on three legs and can rise to the surface. Slightly leaky... no, don't want to waste time fixing that... Maybe, laboratory under remote mansion. Comes with its own disposable security team and viruses that escape easily... not my style, really. Ah, so many choices for an aspiring scientist like myself." He calmly keeps going over the catalogue, almost oblivious to the mayhem his bugs are causing. Arms Bazaar Somewhere in Ovitznia 6 June 2:02 PM Nestled in a heavily-forested part of the Ovitznian wilderness is a clearing by a river. The clearing is full of pitched army tents, stacks of crates, dozens of parked military vehicles and aircraft and tables full of guns, launchers and mines. Troops clad in black and red uniforms provide security while hundreds of people from around the world examine the goods being offered on sale. Some inspect the hardware while others make purchases with suited men. Watching it all going on is Colonel Gustav Havoc. He is rubbing his gloved hands with glee as he sees transaction after transaction being made. Havoc:"Just look at all that. My weapons are selling like ice cream in the desert. Buyers from around the world want my hardware and are all too happy to part ways with their money." While he watches Lieutenant Skeam comes walking up to Havoc and salutes to get his attention. Skeam:"Excuse me, Colonel." Havoc:"What is it?" Skeam:"A report from all our radar stations. No sighting of any hostile forces or incursions into our territory." Havoc:"Really? A third day this bazaar has been running and still nobody trying to stop us? Seems the Road Rovers have been hit harder by the funding cut than I thought. Well, too bad for them, good for my business. Get back to work and report any suspicious sightings, if that actually does happen." Skeam:"Yes, sir!" Skeam salutes again and runs off. Havoc goes to mingle with some of his customers, who are admiring several of his attack choppers. Meeting Room Vanguard Complex Unknown Location 7 June 08:00 AM: This is a square room with a polished, u-shape wooden table with matching chairs. Two pairs of double doors lead into the room, one in front of the table and one back. The back door is flanked by banners depicting the Vanguard insignia. Seated at the head of the table is Hawkins, now wearing a uniform that fits his mutated form. Among those seated around the table are Suchong, Thomason, River, Andropov and Macmillan. Hawkins looks at Macmillan. Hawkins:"How goes things at the UN, Ian?" Macmillan:"The Security Council has yet convene, but there is growing concern amongst some member nations about the chaos and destruction being caused by various factions and villains now that the Road Rovers are broke. They won't vote to restore funding, but they don't like all these bad guys running amock, either." Hawkins:"Good. With the Rovers gone the chaos is increasing ten- fold around the world." Macmillan:"That's something that worries me. The Vanguard is sup- posed to take the Road Rovers' place. And yet here you are, sitting on your thumbs." Hawkins:"Exactly. We let the world burn and allow the people to become desperate for a saviour for as long as possible, then we sweep in and save the planet, securing the future of the Vanguard." Macmillan:"But if you let it happen for too long the United Nations members might change their minds about funding the Road Rovers." Hawkins:"Just work on keeping the votes for as long as possible, preferably up to the elections for the new Secretary- General. Do it, and that position will be yours." Macmillan:"If you say so, Hawkins. I'll try my best." Hawkins:"I know you will." Hawkins turns to Andropov. Hawkins:"What about our own funds, Andropov?" Andropov:"Our funding is secure and our list of donors is increasing each day. Soon we will have enough money to put the Vanguard on the map for good." Hawkins:"Excellent! Keep working on getting us more funding. We will need every penny we can get." Hawkins turns to Suchong. Hawkins:"How is Stalker and the prisoners at your laboratory?" Suchong:"Stalker is cooperating just fine, Mister Hawkins. A few powders in his meals each day keeps him from fully using his abilities to escape. It also makes it easier for the guards to bring him in for examinations and back to his cell." Hawkins:"Excellent. Be sure to have him ready for his live media appearance, Suchong." Suchong:"He'll be delightled, Mister Hawkins. I'll make sure of it." Hawkins:"Good." He looks at Thomason and River. Hawkins:"Any idea where Vanderberg is being held?" Thomason:"Our intel indicates that he is still being held at Casa Lupo under heavy guard. They haven't made any attempt to move him." Hawkins:"River, is your team making preparations to extract Vanderberg to safety?" River:"We're getting ready to strike soon. Fleabag told us that Reggie will soon be moved to the Road Rovers' main base, so we plan to hit them mid-transfer and get Reggie there." Hawkins:"Good, but are you going to use any of our robotic units?" River:"Not after what happened at Casa Lupo. I'm going to ask Mei Jing to help us out instead. I don't trust those machines after what happened." Hawkins:"Agreed. I've had all divisions recall their drone units for a security upgrade. The GONV screwed us over in the battle at Casa Lupo and I want to be sure our robots won't get taken over again when we launch Big Finish." Thomason:"Are you sure Big Finish will work, sir?" Hawkins:"Certainly. And the GONV's attack, disruptive as it was, will ensure it works. But let's discuss it at a later date. Any questions or issues any of you want to raise?" Hawkins looks around the table, but nobody says anything. He nods in satisfaction and gets up. Hawkins:"Very well. This meeting is adjourned." Hawkins turns around and leaves through the banner doors. The others get up and file out the other door. The Master's Quarters Road Rover Mission Control United States of America 9 June 11:31 AM: Jaco Vorster comes into the Master's Quarters, where the door is usually kept closed. However, this time the door is open and Jaco sees the Master sitting at a desk, looking tired and careworn as he hands over a pair of envelopes to two dejected Rovers. Jaco waits for them to finish. Master:"Again, I'm truly sorry. I can only wish you good luck and hope for the best in your future endeavours." The two Rovers simply nod and bid the Master goodbye. They then get up and leave the quarters slowly. Jaco watches them go and goes to the Master. Jaco:"Another two, professor?" Master:"Yes, I'm afraid so. I've been forced to let Rovers go on a daily basis just to keep the organisation from going bankrupt." Jaco:"Don't you have some kind of cash reserve or emergency rainy day fund for times like this?" Master:"We do. Or did. The United Nations vote not only cut funding, but they also stripped us of our accounts and reserve money as well." Jaco:"What? Is that legal?" Master:"Yes it is. At least according to the rules the Road Rovers are bound to." Jaco:"That is stupid, no offense." Master:"None taken, I assure you. It was our mistake, and mine in particular, to let ourselves be so vulnerable on the most important aspect of the Road Rovers: our finances. Now it is costing us dearly. We cannot go out on missions and I have to fire Rovers who depend on me for ther livelihoods. Like the two you just saw." Jaco:"What about other sources of funding? Have you tried finding a different sponsor? There has to be someone out there who can fund you, especially considering the news today. Your enemies are causing trouble everywhere and nobody can stop them." Master:"I have sent out our teams to go speak to possible donors. We have to get money, as you're right. We cannot let the bad guys just run wild like this." Jaco:"Funny that the UN thought it was a good idea." Master:"They had no choice, considering public opinion had turned on us. Anyway, enough of that. How can I help you, Jaco?" Jaco:"Professor, it has to do with that public opinion business. The world turned on you after you allegedly attacked Baytown. And the news did show cano-sapiens dressed in Rover uniforms conducting the attack." Master:"That's right." Jaco:"Right. Before that happen, Sleek and I lost a crate of spare uniforms." The Master frowns. Master:"What are you suggesting?" Jaco:"I'm suggesting that that crate wasn't lost. It was stolen and given over to the group behind the Baytown attack. In other words, your got a spy in your midst." Master:"That is a very serious allegation, Jaco. Do you have any proof?" Jaco:"No, but I do have a suspect. I think its my partner, Sleek. She was the only one other than me who had access to those uniforms." Master:"I see. That's not enough, though. You will need hard evidence to prove that to me. And frankly, without it you yourself will come under suspicion because of your past attitude towards non-humans." Jaco is taken aback. Jaco:"You're joking! They can't suspect me of working for the enemy! That's insane!" Master:"Calm down, Jaco. No one is accusing you, but unfortunately your history does count against you. If you really think Sleek is behind this, then you must provide me with the necessary proof. If you do, then I promise we will deal with her. Otherwise, I can't do anything." Jaco:"Proof? Right, I'll get proof. I promise that!" Master:"Very well. Try not to cause trouble." Jaco grumbles and leaves the Master's quarters in a huff. Just as he walks through the doorway he finds Riptide waiting for him. Riptide:"I overheard you talking to the Master about Sleek." Jaco:"Oh really? And you probably thinking I'm just another xenophobe, right?" Riptide:"No, I don't because you are completely correct: Sleek is working for the Vanguard." Jaco is surprised. Jaco:"You know? How?" Riptide:"I as once held captive by the Vanguard as part of their sapien conscription program, and Sleek was one of the conscripts. I know her since she tried to hit on me, but I was already mated to Roz. I managed to escape, but it seems Sleek didn't." Jaco:"You got to tell the Master! He's right here..." Riptide shakes his head quickly. Riptide:"No, Roz and I can't tell him. We don't have proof, either." Jaco:"Maybe he'll take your word for it?" Riptide:"Maybe, but I think its best we get some hard evidence of her dealings with the Vanguard." Jaco:"So what can we do?" Riptide:"You can do it. Since you're her partner she'll think you won't be able to make a case against her because of your past." Jaco grumbles. Jaco:"Don't tell me. Everyone still thinks I'm a racist." Riptide:"That's why you'll be able to find the evidence we need. Keep a close eye on Sleek and see what she does. Get a hold of anything that can prove her guilty. Roz and I will back you up when you go to the Master to tell him about Sleek." Jaco nods reluctantly. Jaco:"Okay. I'll do it." Riptide:"Good luck, Jaco." Jaco:"Thank you." Jaco walks away while Riptide watches before heading into the Master's quarters. Vorster Estate Eastern Cape Province South Africa 11:42 AM: The Stealth Rover has landed in the driveway in front of the Vorster Estate mansion. Its cargo ramp is lowered, allowing the members of Unit STRIKE unload computers, supplies, crates and other items and carry it all into the mansion. Inside the mansion's living room all the goods are being placed in neat stacks while most of the furniture has been moved to adjacent rooms. Striker and Phoenix are going over the items while Firefly is playing on a couch covered with a blanket, tugging playfully at the blanket's corners. Striker:"... and twenty. Right, those can be moved into the dining room." Phoenix:"What about the canned food, Strikie?" Striker:"There is a walk-in pantry in the kitchen. We can put it all on the shelves. Later we can go to George and buy the perishables." Phoenix:"And soon. It will be Firefly's lunch time and you know how she can cry when she doesn't get din dins." Striker sighs. Striker:"I know." Phoenix smiles. At that moment Maska the family groundskeeper comes into the room carrying a pile of dirty linens. Maska:"I've made up all the beds, Master Gerard. I put on fresh covers and I dusted off all the furniture in the bedrooms." Striker:"Dankie, Maska. When you're done can you help Phoenix put all the food we brought into the pantry?" Maska:"Yes." Striker:"Dankie." Maska leaves the room. Illanov comes in next, carrying a sealed box and placing it on the floor. Illanov:"That's the last of them, comrade. Vicki is making sure that we haven't let anything else behind in the Stealth." Striker:"Good work, Alex. Did you see how far Corsair, Karen and Merit are with the new security sensors?" Illanov:"Last time I saw them they were done with the gate and had moved on down the fence." Striker:"Once they're done we will need to test them to see if the sensors work. Then we can focus on placing security systems inside the mansion." Illanov:"Dah. I'm glad the Master agreed to let us use your old home as a temporary headquarters, comrade." Striker:"It saves money, which is what we really need to do right now. Michelle has offered to pay our bills, with my brother's blessing." Phoenix:"That's nice of them." Striker:"By the way, Alex, did you see Tanarus and Elexis?" Illanov:"Dah. Tanarus is on the roof putting up the dishes and placing the wiring. Elexis is helping him from the ground." Striker:"She needs to watch herself. Elexis is close to giving birth so she can't do anything strenouos." Phoenix:"She's a medic, Strikie. She knows how to be careful." Striker:"I hope so. I just don't want her or her pups to get hurt just to help us." Phoenix:"She'll be fine, Strikie. We just need to be ready to help her when she finally has to give birth." Striker:"Ja. Alex, can you take these boxes to the study? We'll use that room as our communications hub." Striker points to several specific boxes. Illanov nods, picks up one of the boxes and heads further into the house. Firefly tumbles from the couch while still holding onto the blanket and pulls it off. The pup whines as she struggles to untangle herself from the cover. Phoenix giggles and goes over to help Firefly. Just then Maska comes back in and walks up to Striker. Maska:"Master Striker, a female Wild Dog wants to see you." Striker:"Really? Show her in." Maska nods and heads back out. A few seconds later in walks Kenya the African Wild Dog. She is wearing a black leather biker's jacket and pants and clutching a motorcycle helmet under one arm. She smiles at Striker. Kenya:"Hello Striker. Glad I could find you." Striker:"Hello Kenya. Welcome to the Vorster Estate. I didn't expect you here. Had a safe journey?" Kenya:"Yes I have. Quite pleasant to look at the African countryside while riding. Is Sheppie here?" Striker:"Sheppie? Oh! You mean Andrew Shephard? Ja, he's here. Is that why you came here?" Kenya blushes a little. Kenya:"Well, that and the Master contacted me and asked if I could volunteer to help. I eagerly agreed, its been a while since I last visited." Striker:"In that case you're welcome to stay. We need as much help as we can get these days. I'll have Maska ready a room for you." Kenya smiles and shakes her head politely. Kenya:"No, that won't be necessary. I'll stay in Sheppie's room." Striker raises an eyebrow. Striker:"If you say so." Just then Shephard comes in from another room and doesn't see Kenya immediately. Shephard:"Excuse me, sir. The new armory is up and ready for use." Striker:"Dankie, And..." Kenya:"Sheppie!" Kenya runs up to Shephard and pounces him. Shephard gasps and catches the Wild Dog in his arms. She immediatey lifts his gasmask and gives him a big kiss on the lips. His eyes go wide. When they break the kiss Shephard is looking in surprise at Kenya. Shephard:"Ken! What are you doing here?" Kenya:"I thought you could use some company, Sheppie. The Master told me about the trouble you guys are having and I thought it would be a good time to visit." Shephard:"But... where are you going to stay?" Kenya:"Right here with you of course, silly." Shephard:"What?!" Before Shephard can protest further Kenya kisses him again. Striker chuckles and turns to get back to work. Holding Cells Vanguard Laboratories Unknown Location At That Moment: This is a set of six sturdy rooms set in a circle around a central room. Each room has a single, thick door with a small viewing window at eye-level. Inside each cell is a bed, a sink and a toilet. The walls are covered with white tiles and the rooms are lit up with fluorescent lights set into the ceilings. Inside two adjacent cells are Tank and Allison, both of them wearing tight white jumpsuits and electronic collars around their necks. A third cell is under heavy guard from Vanguard soldiers and N-Ops. Inside that cell is a heavily drugged Stalker, also wearing a white jumpsuit. The main doors into the holding cells slide open and in walks Suchong along with some orderlies. The guards stand to attention. Guard:"Ten hut!" Suchong walks to Stalker's cell and looks inside. Suchong:"How is our star inmate?" Guard:"Like a well-behaved puppy, sir. The drugs are working fine." Suchong:"Naturally. Right, open his cell. It's time to bring him out for his big debut." Guard:"Yes, sir." The guards unlock the cell door via a remote switch. Two N-Ops go in before Suchong and his team. Suchong comes in next and walks over to Stalker. He grins at the wolf. Suchong:"Rise and shine." Stalker can only moan in response. He sits up in bed, looking very unsteady. Suchong:"Still a bit drowsy, are we? Too bad. Time to get up." Suchong steps back to allow the orderlies to grab Stalker's arms and hoist him to his feet. Stalker leans on them, unable to stand himself. Suchong:"Take him to the exam room and get him ready." Orderly:"Yes, boss." The orderlies drag Stalker out of his cell and out of the holding pens. Stalker is unable to walk much or resist in any way. Suchong walks over to Allison's cell door and taps on the glass. Suchong:"How are you doing?" Allison growls at him. Allison:"Like you care about our well-being." Suchong:"Of course I do. Test subjects like you are hard to get." Allison:"What are you going to do with us? Or are you forever going to keep sticking needles into us?" Suchong:"For now, the latter. But if the tests we're doing on you provide then we will move on to the more interesting stuff." Tank bangs on his door, annoying Suchong. Tank:"You get us out of here, you dirty stinker!" Suchong:"Hey! What happened last time you made this much noise?" Tank growls but backs away from the door. Suchong nods with satisfaction. Suchong:"Yes, you remember. You don't want to experience what happened last time." He looks back at Allison. Suchong:"And no trouble from you, either. We got another big day today and I would like to do my work without you being drugged, again." Allison growls. Suchong turns around and leaves the cells as another guard comes in carrying a pair of food trays for the two prisoners. ICU Medical Ward Road Rover Headquarters United States of America 9:02 AM: This is a single room specially built for pasients who need intensive care. Each bed is surrounded by high-tech equipment and monitoring computers. While most of the beds are empty, one is occupied. Lying in the bed and hooked up to the machines is Tosca, still breathing and in a coma. Riptide and Roz are by her side, dressed in medical fatigues as they do a check-up on her. The Master enters the ICU and walks up to them. Master:"How is she doing?" Riptide:"Still in a stable condition. It doesn't look like she suffered permanent damage when she was taken off life support in Rome. Roz just cleaned her up now." Master:"Any signs of change in her coma?" Riptide shakes her head. Riptide:"Nothing. Still the same as always." Roz:"Hardly surprising, being in a coma and all." Master:"How unfortunate, but now that she is here I can have some of my staff look her and see if we can do anything for her coma." Riptide:"I'm not sure you can do anything about her coma, but you are welcome to try. Maybe you and your people will be luckier." Master:"I hope so." Just then Hunter comes running in at such a speed that the wind he creates blows some of the bed covers off. Hunter:"Master, you better come and watch the news." Master:"More bad news for us?" Hunter:"Not sure about us, but it is definitely good news for someone, Master." The Master follows Hunter out of the room, leaving Roz and Riptide to continue caring for Tosca. Briefing Room Road Rover Headquarters 09:11 AM: The other original Rovers, along with a few other Rovers who have not been let go, are gathered here watching the main screen. The Master comes in, followed by Hunter. Colleen turns to them. Colleen:"Good thing you're here, Master. This came on the telly a short while ago." Master:"What is it?" The Master looks at the screen. It is showing a news broadcast displaying a video recording. The recording shows a drugged Stalker tied up and on his knees before a large banner with the Vanguard insignia featuring prominently on it. Two Task Ops flank Stalker. Standing in view is a high-ranking Vanguard operative giving a speech. The news anchor is giving a voice-over. Anchor:"A short while ago this broadcast was transmitted directly to major news networks, as well as posted online on YouTube and other video sites. The organisation called the Vanguard has apparently managed to capture General Stalker, the leader of the notorious KH Military. The unnamed Vanguard spokesperson claimed that the Vanguard has shown it is capable of better dealing with global threats than the Road Rovers and says their capture of Stalker proves that they are ones to trust with global peace and security." Exile snorts. Exile:"That is bigger joke than Stalin agricultural reform plan." Blitz:"Yah. I trust the Gestapo more with peace and security than the Vanguard." Colleen:"What bugs me is why they waited so long to announce the capture. I mean they had to know that we knew they had ambushed Stalker in Rome a day after they did." Hunter looks at Colleen. Hunter:"But do they know that we know that they knew what we had known about the capture?" Colleen blinks and stares at Hunter, then pinches the bridge of her muzzle. Colleen:"You hurt my head, Huntie." Master:"It does seem rather suspect of them. I think they have other plans for Stalker besides parading him before the world's media." Blitz:"But zis not good for us, Master! The Vanguard is looking good and we are looking like bad dogs." Master:"One worry at a time, Blitz. There's nothing we can do about the Vanguard for now. We first need to focus on getting funding to keep our organisation going. We will worry about the Vanguard and Stalker later. Speaking of funding..." The Master turns to Hunter. Master:"I got your email about your fundraiser meeting, Hunter. Who are you going to meet?" Hunter:"There's this wolf-sapien in Vegas who's a big pro-boxer, or pro-wrestler, or pro-something. Anyway, I got a call from him and he said he might be able to sponsor us. Not much, but at least it will be something." Master:"Every little bit helps. When are you meeting him?" Hunter:"Later today. He wants the whole team to be there so he can hold a big press conference with us." Master:"What is his name?" Hunter:"Barbatus, Master." Master:"Hmmm, that name I've heard before. I'll have to look him up. But this is good news, however small it may be. Be sure you get to Las Vegas on time and put your best paws forward." Hunter nods and salutes. Hunter:"You bet we will, Master!" Just then another story about the Vanguard appears on the news. Everyone's attention turns back to the main screen so they can watch what else is being said about the Vanguard. Just through one of the doorways, out of sight, is Sleek. She had been listening to the conversation. Sleek:"Better make a call." She begins to walk away down the corridor. But from the opposite end of the corridor Jaco is peeking at Sleek from around a corner. Jaco:"If that isn't suspect I don't know what is." He waits until Sleek is out of sight before walking to the briefing room nonchalantly. Trigger's Quarters KHA Alexander Somewhere over Algeria At That Moment: Trigger is sitting at his desk, staring at the screen of his computer where he is watching the video of Stalker and his captors on YouTube. The more he watches the angrier he gets until he finally slams his fist down on the table. Trigger:"D****t! They can't do this! The Vanguard will pay for this insult." He burying his face in his paws in exasperation. Flower, his mate, comes from one of the other rooms and walks up behind him. She puts a paw on his shoulder. Flower:"What's wrong, Trigger?" She then notices the video on the computer screen. She looks at it and folds her ears back. Flower:"That's Stalker!" Trigger:"Yes. The Vanguard are parading him before the world's cameras like some kind of cages animal." He covers his face again, but Flower moves his paws away and looks him in the eyes. Flower:"It's not your fault." Trigger:"No, but now I have the full responsibility of running the entire KH Military. And all the while Stalker is being held by the Vanguard who knows where. This is all too much." Flower:"Not if you keep your head. Your brother didn't make you second-in-command just for fun. He knows you can take his place at any time. And that time has come. You can not let him down now." Trigger sighs. Trigger:"You're right, Flower. I shouldn't get so worked up over this." Flower smiles and licks his cheek. Flower:"That's right. And if you ever feel stressed just come talk to me." She begins to use her power and releases a scent which makes him relax and lean back in his seat. He still sighs a bit when he looks at the video again, but quickly forgets it when Flower gives him another loving lick. Arena Caesar's Palace Las Vegas United States of America 10:48 AM: This is a vast, circular room with rows of seats surrounding a boxing ring in the centre. Big floodlights shine upon the ring while hanging under it is a bank of monitors. At the moment the arena is mostly empty except for the ring, where two wrestlers are practicing under the supervision of a male Red Fox in a business suit. One of the wrestlers is a large grey wolf-sapien with brown fur and grey fur highlights. He is wearing a white t-shirt and boxing shorts. The fox watches the two wrestlers as they spar. Fox:"That's it, Barbatus! Just keep it nice and easy. Don't tire yourself out." The big wolf called Barbatus dodges a swing while responding. Barbatus:"Marvel, I'm a pro wrestler. There's no need to teach me the basics." Marvel:"Just making sure you're in top shape for tonight. You know its going to a big event, with television AND internet coverage from around the world." Barbatus:"I know, I know!" At that moment the Road Rovers enter the arena through one of the crowd entrances. They see Barbatus in the ring. Colleen:"Blimey, he's a big fella isn't he?" Blitz sniffs and flexes his left arm. Blitz:"Not as big, or handsome, as me." Exile rolls his eyes. Colleen does the same before looking at Hunter. Colleen:"So who is that big bloke, Huntie?" Hunter:"He's called Barbatus, a big time wrestling champion. He has made a fortune winning lots of matches around the world, but mostly here in Vegas where he lives." Colleen:"He does look like someone you don't tackle with. Does he use his powers during fights?" Hunter shakes his head. Hunter:"Nope! He likes to fight fair. Besides, his power is a little bit on the dangerous side so we wants to keep the casualties down." Colleen:"Are you saying there have been casualties before?" Hunter:"Er, no comment." Colleen looks suspiciously at Hunter, but the golden retriever just looks towards the ring. As they approach, Marvel the vulpo- sapien sees them and gets up from his seat. He walks over to the Rovers, a smile on his muzzle and his paw stretched out. Marvel:"You're the Road Rovers, right? Welcome to Vegas!" The Rovers all take turns to shake Marvel's paw. Hunter:"That's us! And you are...?" Marvel:"The name is Marvel. I'm Barbatus' manager." Colleen:"Pleased to meet you, guv. Its rare to see a vulpo-sapien." Marvel:"Yeah, it is. I was a side project for a EuroCorp lab here in the States, but I managed to escape into the wild business world and found my fortune here in Vegas." Exile:"EuroCorp not chase you?" Marvel:"Oh they did try. But I eventually gave them the slip, being fox and all. I managed to get a job as a manager in the Sapien Cage Wrestling organization and then, when I heard about Barb here..." He jerks his thumb towards the wolf. Marvel:"... fighting off some guys who tried to get at his friend, and later mate, Roma, I signed him up and the rest is history." Blitz:"You are his manager?" Marvel:"That's right! I arrange the fights, secure sponsors, do the finances, and so forth. But Barb does all the fighting and a lot of the talking. Come, let me introduce him to you." The Rovers follow Marvel to the ring. Barbatus has managed to wrestle his opponent to the floor and pin him down. Marvel comes to the ring. Marvel:"Hey, Barb! When you finished, your guests are waiting." Barbatus:"Just a second, Marv." Barbatus gets off his opponent and helps him up. He them climbs off from the ring and turns to the Rovers. Barbatus:"Hey, the Road Rovers. Pleased to meet you all." They all shake paws. Hunter:"Same here. Elexis told us about you. You're one of General Stalker's pups, right?" Barbatus:"Yes, I am. But I don't follow in my father's paw steps or believe in the KH Military. I'm making my own life here in Las Vegas." Colleen:"You seem to be doing good business." Barbatus:"Definitely! I got my family a nice penthouse in one of best apartments in town and a lot of money. Too much, I think. So that's why I want try and help you Rovers. I know about you're struggling to make ends meet since the UN cut your funding, so I'm here to assist." Exile:"That is generous of you, comrade. We need every ruble you can rescue from couch." Barbatus:"That's why I'm making this offer: Marvel has arranged this charity fight so I can raise funds for the Rovers." Colleen:"I hope you can do so. We don't have a lot of friends these days." Barbatus:"Not to worry. All the charity guests will be people, rich people, who still like the Road Rovers. Marvel has made sure of it." Colleen:"Isn't that a bit... off?" Marvel:"Not at all! It happens all the time in the business world. So its only fair you guys get a piece of the action. And you really need that piece." Blitz:"So when is zis charity fight?" Marvel:"Its scheduled for Thursday night, two days from now." Barbatus:"And while you wait you can take up residence in my den here in Vegas free of charge." Hunter:"Hey, we don't want to indulge." Barbatus shakes his head and holds up his paws. Barbatus:"Not at all! Money is tight and I'm offering my place for free. The hotels can be expensive even for a single night." Marvel:"Better believe it. I've seen those prices." The fox shudders. Hunter:"In that case we accept, don't we gang?" The other Rovers all nod their heads in agreement. Barbatus claps his paws in satisfaction. Barbatus:"Excellent! Let's go to my place and get a drink while Marvel gets everything arranged." Hunter:"Sounds good, though we only drink sodas." Barbatus:"Pepsi or coke, name your poison. Heh." Blitz:"You have peppermint milkshake?" Barbatus stares dumbfounded at Blitz. Exile quickly steps in. Exile:"We explain later. Let's go, comrade." Barbatus:"Er... right! Let's get going." The Rovers follow Barbatus out of the ring while Marvel has a quick chat with the other wrestler as he climbs out of the ring. However, at the far end of the ring a lone figure is watching the group leave. Once they disappear from sight, the figure turns around and leaves as well. Hotel Room Caesar's Palace 11:08 AM: The hallway here is lined with ornate hotel doors and a bright, red and gold patterned carpet laid out on its floor. A man dressed in a red, black and white casino uniform is walking down it. He comes to a door with a "Do Not Disturb" sign hanging from the door handle. He knocks four times before asking. Man:"Anyone order a mayonaisse and sardine pizza?" There is a brief pause before the door is unlocked and the man is allowed inside. The hotel room is quite luxurious, or would be if it had not been converted into a command centre. There are laptops, weapons, combat gear, empty soda cans and pizza boxes all over the place. A number of Vanguard soldiers in civilian clothes are milling about, cleaning firearms, checking laptops or doing maintenance work on a pair of LICUs. The casino man makes his way to the balcony, where River is standing with a pair of binoculars in her paws. Casino:"Reporting in, Ma'am." River nods, not looking away from the cityscape before her. River:"What have you got?" Casino:"The Rovers have arrived at the hotel and have made contact with Barbatus. He's taking them to his penthouse where they will stay until the charity bout he's got planned." River:"Good. Anything about the match itself?" Casino:"Just one: Marvel mentioned that the donors attending the fight will be those who are sympathetic to the Road Rovers' cause. Probably to ensure that the Rovers get a lot of money." River:"I doubt the money raised will keep them running, but the bosses don't want the Rovers to get a single cent. Get back out there and find out everything you can about the venue." Casino:"Yes, Ma'am!" The casino man salutes and leaves the hotel room. River raises her binoculars and begins to scan the entire length of the Vegas Strip. Jaco's Quarters Road Rover Headquarters United States of America 10 June 07:02 AM: Jaco's quarters is pretty spartan save for a personal items like fotos of his family and his own alarm clock. Jaco is sitting on his bed while Riptide is sitting on a chair nearby. Jaco:"... and then she walked off." Riptide:"You're right. Sounds to me like she was eavesdropping." Jaco:"Ja, but its still not enough." Riptide thinks for a bit. Riptide:"I might have an idea. Sleek has always had the habit of saying things out loud when startled or surprised." Jaco:"What are you saying? Should I jump in front of her and go boo, then she will confess she is a spy?" Riptide chuckles and shakes his head. Riptide:"No, but just enough to make her say something she would rather keep secret. I know a trick I used to pull on her a few times in the past. Maybe we can do it here as well and see if she does something stupid." Jaco:"What do you have in mind?" Riptide:"I'm very good at holding my breath and projecting my voice at the same time. So here's my plan." Jaco leans forward and listens carefully while Riptide explains his plan to him. Swimming Pool Gymnasium Road Rover Headquarters 11:03 AM: This is a large hall where an Olympic-size pool is located. There are many diving boards of various heights and chairs lining the pool. Above is a row of flourescent lights. Doors lead out to other parts of the gym, including the male and female locker rooms. Jaco is the only here, climbing down from a ladder he had set against one of the walls. Riptide then comes in and walks up to Jaco. Riptide:"Is it ready?" Jaco:"Ja, it is. Look." Riptide looks to where Jaco is pointing. Set up just above one of intercom speakers is another, smaller speaker with a transmitter. Jaco:"I set them up around the pool, so she should be able to hear you. I'll play your message from here." He goes behind one of the chairs and points out a laptop hidden there. Riptide nods in satisfaction. Riptide:"Good work, Jaco." Jaco:"Thank you. Now where is that sound file?" Riptide digs around in his pocket and pulls out a USB stick. He gives it to Jaco. Riptide:"Right here. I think we're all set. You can go and get Sleek." Jaco:"Okay. Let me first get this stick connected to the laptop." Riptide:"I'll go change." While Riptide goes to the male locker room, Jaco goes to the laptop and plugs the USB stick into it. After working on the laptop and getting the sound player set up, he leaves the swimming pool area. A few minutes later Riptide emerges wearing a black fdull-body swimsuit with navy blue markings. On the shoulders are Vanguard insignias. He goes to the pool, feels the water and takes a deep breath. Riptide:"Here we go." He jumps off the edge and dives into the pool with a big splash. He swims to the bottom and then begins to use his powers. He makes an air bubble form around his muzzle that allows him to breathe while also keeping him from floating to the surface. Riptide lies down flat at the bottom of the pool and waits. Some time later Jaco returns to the swimming pool, this time with Sleek in tow. Sleek:"So what did the Master want us to do?" Jaco:"The Master wants us to check the ph levels of the pool to make sure algae doesn't form on the sides." Sleek is a bit confused. Sleek:"Really? Nobody is using pool these days due to all the lay-offs." Jaco:"Yes, but we still need to keep the pool clean." Sleek shrugs. Sleek:"If you say so. Let's get to work." Jaco:"I'll get the chlorine kit while you get the pool brush and sweep the sides." Sleek nods and goes to fetch the pool brush from its hanger on a nearby wall. Jaco, however, sneaks over the laptop and pushes a key before resuming his walk. An instant later Riptide's voice comes over the speakers and echo through the large hall. Riptide:"Sleeeeek..." Sleek yips in fright and looks around in alarm. Sleek:"W-what?!... Who said that?" Riptide:"Yoouu... killed me.... Sleek... why?" Sleek:"What! ... A-Ammo, is that you?" Riptide:"Yes, it is me... or was me, before you let me die..." Sleek is now very alarmed, looking about with her fur standing on end. Sleek:"Ammo! I-I didn't mean to... it was not... I mean..." Riptide:"It was all your fault! You did this to me!" Sleek:"I swear I didn't mean to!" Riptide:"You let the Vanguard destroy me! And now you work for them!" Sleek:"No, I'm not! I'm a Road Rover! I swear it!" Meanwhile, Riptide begins to use his powers to make the water of the pool churn and bubble. This gets Sleek's attention. Almost against her own instincts she walks slowly to the pool's edge and looks down. In the pool she sees Riptide seemingly lying dead at the bottom. Sleek(gasping):"Nooo...." Suddenly Riptide floats up towards her. Riptide:"YOU WILL PAY!!!" His arms burst out of the water reaching out. Sleek screams and turns around to flee. She runs out the hall with her tail between her legs. Riptide emerges from the pool while Jaco comes out of the storage room, laughing. Jaco:"Ha ha! Look at her run!" Riptide gets out of the water. Riptide:"Did she say anything about the Vanguard." Jaco stops laughing and shakes his head. Jaco:"No, she simply denied it. But maybe she ran off to confess to the Professor." Riptide shakes his head. Riptide:"Doubt it. If she hasn't blurted it out now then she won't." Jaco:"So now what?" Riptide:"We think up something else. But I think she will be very freaked out now, so maybe you can go talk to her and get on her good side. Maybe then, when she's got your trust, she will slip up at last." Jaco:"If you say so." Riptide:"I think it will work. By the way, where's the towels?" Jaco:"I'll get you one." Jaco runs off to the locker rooms to fetch a towel while Riptide shakes his body dry like the canine he is. Union Buildings Pretoria South Africa 11 June 8:56 AM: Striker, Phoenix and Corsair are currently sitting in chairs in the hallway outside the president's office. The walls are made of laminated wood lined with photographs of previous presidents. Phoenix is looking at the photos while Corsair is playing a game on his phone. She notices Adriaan Vorster's photo hanging on the wall and turns to Striker. Phoenix:"Strikie?" Striker:"Ja?" Phoenix:"I didn't honestly expect to see your brother's photo still hanging here." Striker notices the photo and nods. Striker:"I suppose it is. Then again, they probably decided he was not bad enough to justify having his photo removed compared to the old regime's leadership." Phoenix:"Probably. Are we going to visit him?" Striker:"Once we're done here. I need to tell him about Jaco and Karen." Phoenix nods. Just then the presidential office's door opens and a secretary steps outside. She approaches the group. Secretary:"The President will see you now." Striker:"Dankie." The trio get up. Corsair quickly turns off his phone and puts it into one of his pockets. The three of them are escorted into the office. The President, a black woman wearing a modern-style Xhosa dress and headscarf, gets up from her chair behind the table and smiles. President:"Welcome, Road Rovers. You're Striker, Phoenix and Corsair, am I right?" The trio nod their heads. Striker:"That's reg, Madam President." President:"Good. Please, have a seat." The trio sit down on the fancy chairs placed in front of the President's desk. The President herself sits down. Phoenix looks around the room. Phoenix:"Where are Fola and Bastiff, Madam President?" Corsair looks around nervously. President:"Just taking a quick walk outside. They should be back here soon. Now, how can I help you?" Striker:"Madam President, what did you think about the United Nations' decision to ending funding for the Rovers?" The President stops smiling and frowns. President:"Frankly, it is incredibly stupid. Defunding the Road Rovers not long after they saved this country from the Elite Guard? And now I see it all the news: every villain and villain group of every kind rampaging all over the planet. And yet the UN refuses to reconsider its decision." Phoenix:"We've been struggling to keep our operations running and our Rovers paid." President:"So you've come here hoping to find funding?" Striker:"If possible." President:"If possible indeed! My government would gladly provide funding if it wasn't for a serious issue." Striker:"Serious issue, Madam President?" Before the President can reply, the door swings open and in comes Bastiff the male Boerboel and Fola the female Jack Russell. Both of them are in their normal, canine forms. But while Bastiff trots in at an easy pace, Fola rushes in. When she sees Corsair she growls and rushes straight for him. Before Corsair can react, Fola nips his ankles. Corsair:"AAAARG! Not again!" He jumps onto the chair while Fola runs around the chair yapping with excitement. Corsair:"Shoo! Go away!" Phoenix is stifling a giggle while the President is laughing out loud. President:"Fola has taken a liking to your ankles, I see." Corsair:"Again! Why does she always go for me?! Why doesn't she go for Striker or something?" Striker raises an eyebrow at Corsair. Striker:"Are you implying something, David?" Corsair looks embarressed and tries to explain himself, but Fola manages to jump onto the chair and bites his ankles again. Corsair and falls backwards off the chair and onto the floor with a thud. Fola jumps off and tries to nip him again, but Bastiff runs up and grabs her tail with his muzzle. Phoenix comes over and scoops up Fola in her arms while Striker helps Corsair to his feet. Phoenix:"Still an active little girl aren't you, Fola?" Fola barks and wags her tail excitedly. Corsair rubs his sore back and bitten ankles while getting his chair back up. Corsair:"Why is she here anyway? Shouldn't she be with Karen?" Striker:"Normally, yes. But since Bastiff is also the presidential dog for South Africa and Fola is his partner..." Phoenix:"... and girlfriend." Fola barks. Striker:"... Fola can therefore be here with Bastiff and the President too." Corsair sits down, still in pain. Corsair:"Fine, but why must she keep biting me?" Phoenix:"She thinks you're fun to play with." Fola barks at Corsair, who rolls his eyes. Striker turns his attention back to the President. Striker:"What was this serious issue you mentioned, Madam Presi- dent?" President:"A few weeks before the UN vote on your funding, I got a call from someone who said if we voted in favour of continued funding I would pay the price. I ignored him and we voted against the resolution that cut you off. A few hours later both the underwater fiber optic cables that link South Africa to the Internet were damaged in several places, resulting in millions of Rands in damages and lost business." Phoenix:"I can take a good guess who was the responsible party." President:"Afterwards I got a call again. It was the same voice warning me that more such attacks would follow if we defied the UN." Striker:"So you cannot fund us because of that?" President:"Precisely. I'm sorry I can't do more, but I cannot risk any further attacks. Especially now that South Africa is still recovering from the Elite Guard invasion." Striker:"We understand. In that case, can I request that we take Bastiff and Fola back with us? We are understaffed and we need their help, Madam President." The President nods her head. President:"Certainly. You need them more than I do at the moment, so they are welcome to join you." Bastiff and Fola bark. Striker:"Dankie, Madam President. We appreciate any assistance." President:"I wish we could do more." Striker:"Every little bit helps, Madam President." They all get up and shake hands. Fola, however, is more interested in growling and barking at Corsair, who looks nervously at the little Jack Russell. Transdogmafier Room Road Rover Headquarters United States of America 12 June 7:00 AM: Most of the Transdogmafiers have been switched off and disconnected, though a pair of them are still operational. Jaco is waiting here, pacing back and forth while glacing at his wristwatch now and then. A short time later Karen and Corsair come in, followed by Fola and Bastiff. Fola runs up excitedly to Jaco. Jaco:"Hey, Fola." He pets the Jack Russell. Bastiff then comes up to Jaco, who smiles and kneels down to stroke the big dog. Jaco:"Bastiff! Good to see you, ou baas!" Bastiff wags his tail happily. Jaco then turns to Karen and Corsair. Jaco:"Had a good flight, sister?" Karen:"Ja. It was nice and quiet, and David and I had a good talk." Corsair:"And I got the chance to show her my flying skills." Karen glances at Corsair with a raised eyebrow. Karen:"You know the autopilot flew us most of the way, right?" Corsair is flustered. Corsair:"Hey! I did initiate the take-off first, didn't I?" Karen(smirking):"Of course." Jaco clears his throat to get their attention. Jaco:"Shall we get Bastiff and Fola into the Transdogmafiers?" Corsair:"Good idea. The sooner we're done the sooner we can head back to SA. Plus we need to see the Master." They all walk towards the Transdogmafiers. Fola trots up to one of them and sniffs suspiciously. She then begins to bark at it. Karen:"Come on, Fola. Get into the machine." But Fola keeps growling at the Transdogmafier. Corsair:"Maybe Bastiff can go in first to show its not that bad." Jaco:"Good idea." Jaco gestures for Bastiff to enter the Transdogmafier. The canine nods, enters it and waits while Fola looks curiously. The machine starts up and bathes Bastiff in a glowing light. His silhouette transforms from an ordinary dog to a cano-sapien. Once the machine is done he steps outside, fully transformed and wearing the Road Rover uniform. Bastiff:"See? It's not that bad." Fola barks and runs excitedly around Bastiff. Karen then comes up and gestures to the other Transdogmafier. Karen:"Okay, Fola. Your turn. Come on." Fola wastes no time and runs into the machine. Moments later the machine starts up and transforms her into a cano-sapien. Once the machine is done she steps out. She is a bit short but good-looking and wearing the uniform too. She looks herself over. Fola:"Wow! This looks amazing! Wow!" Bastiff:"See, Fola? Wasn't so bad." Fola turns to Bastiff and stands to attention with a smile. Fola:"How do I look?" Bastiff looks her over and nods approvingly. Bastiff:"You look very nice. The uniform emphasizes your breasts really well." Fola gasps and everyone stares at Bastiff, who immediately grabs his muzzle in embarresment. Fola:"Excuse me?!" Bastiff:"No, no! I didn't mean to say that!" Fola:"Grrrr!" Corsair laughs. Corsair:"Tongue got too loose, eh Bastiff? That would be like me admitting that I like staring at Karen's a** when she wears the uniform." Corsair's eyes go wide and his face turns red as he claps his hands over his mouth. Karen looks at him in shock and then slaps him in the face. Corsair:"Ow..." Karen:"You pervert!" Corsair(flustered):"I didn't mean to say out loud! I swear it!" Karen:"You certainly will be swearing a lot when I'm done with you!" As the couples argue, Jaco is the first to notice what is up. He goes to Karen and taps her shoulder. Karen:"What?" Jaco:"Tell me your favourite colour, Karen. But lie about it." Karen:"Why?" Jaco:"Asseblief, Karen." Karen:"Fine, its blue." Her eyes widen. Karen:"No, I don't mean to say blue! I meant blue! No, blue!" Jaco grins and turns to Fola. Jaco:"Fola, could you follow me?" Fola looks curiously at Jaco but follows him to the opposite side of the room. Once she is there, Jaco turns to Karen and shouts. Jaco:"Lie about your favourite colour." Karen:"It's red! Hey, I didn't say blue this time." Jaco:"So that's it." Jaco and Fola return to the group. Jaco:"Fola's power seems to be some kind of energy field that makes people around her tell the truth." Bastiff:"Is that why Corsair and I said those things out loud?" Jaco:"Can't see any other reason why you two couldn't keep your secrets to yourselves." Karen thinks and turns back to Corsair. Karen:"Do you have some naughty pictures on your laptop?" Corsair:"Yes, I do." Corsair's eyes bug out, then he groans and buries his face in his hands. Karen laughs. Karen:"I might find this useful." Jaco:"So would I. We're having trouble here and Fola's power would be very useful. Let's go see the Professor first, though." Karen:"Good idea. I think David has talked enough for today." Corsair:"No kidding." Fola grins at Bastiff. Fola:"Now I know you won't be able to cheat on me." Bastiff gulps and rubs the back of his head. The group leave the Transdogmafier room, unaware that someone was watching them from the shadows. It is Sleek. Sleek:"S***, that's going to cause me trouble. Best stay away from her." She waits until the coast is clear before leaving the room herself. The Master's Quarters Road Rover Mission Control 7:30 AM: The group is now assembled in the Master's quarters, seated around a desk. Behind the desk is the Master himself, listening to the report Corsair is giving him. Corsair:"... and so the South African government cannot help us." Master:"Your suspicions are probably right. The Vanguard are definitely behind it, and they've probably bullied a few of the other, smaller United Nations member states as well. A pity that we have nothing solid to prove or counter it." Corsair:"Yeah. That's about it for now, boss. Karen and I will be taking Fola and Bastiff back to South Africa to help us." Master:"All right. Fola, Bastiff. Thank you for volunteering." Fola smiles widely and wags her tail while Bastiff sits up proudly. Bastiff:"It is my duty to serve!" Fola:"Happy to help!" At this point Jaco gets up and goes over to the Master. He whispers to him. Master:"What?... Oh, really?... Yes, that would be helpful... I absolutely agree." The Master turns to Fola. Master:"I'd like you to stay here with us for a while, Fola." Fola:"Why?" Master:"We have... a problem here at HQ which require your unique powers to resolve. Will you help us with it, Fola?" Fola looks curiously at Karen. Fola:"Should I stay, Mistress?" Karen:"If the Master says so, then yes. But what is this problem, Master?" Master:"Can't really say at this point. Once it is resolved, however, you will all be informed and Fola can return to South Africa." Karen:"All right, Fola can stay here." Corsair:"I'll tell Striker and the others, though I'm really curious about this problem." Master:"You will all be told in good time. Fola stays here and the rest of you can return to South Africa. I'll have Fola brought to you once the matter is resolved." The group all nod and prepare to leave, but Jaco comes over to Fola and stops her. Jaco:"Stay here a bit, Fola. The Master and I will explain what is going on." Fola:"Okay." Fola sits back down. The Master and Jaco both wait until the others have left the quarters before the two of them being to explain the situation surrounding Sleek and their suspicions about her. Arena Caesar's Palace Las Vegas United States of America 13 June 7:03 PM: The arena is now packed with plenty of spectators, many of them from wealthy backgrounds. The ring is fully illuminated with floodlights, while overhead is an electronic counter showing the amount of money raised. So far the counter is showing several million dollars and is still rising. In a private booth overlooking the ring is Barbatus, Marvel and the Road Rovers. Barbatus is wearing an overcoat over his fighting shorts, Marvel is dressed in his finest suit and the Rovers have their uniforms on, all neat and polished. Hunter:"Wow, quite a crowd out there." Barbatus:"I told you it would be quite an event. Lots of big names here to support the fight, and the Rovers." Colleen spots a pair of familiar faces in the crowd. Colleen:"I see Tanarus and Elexis over there. Guess they've come here to see the fight." Blitz:"Or there isn't much for them to do at HQ, yah?" Barbatus:"I got some of my own friends and relatives to attend the bout as well. Look over there." Barbatus points to a group of wolf-sapiens sitting further back up in the stands. The Rovers look curiously at them. Hunter:"That's quite a wolf pack." Exile:"They comrades of yours, comrade Barbatus?" Barbatus:"Yup. All of them are also refugees from the KH Military or related to someone in the organisation. Plus, two of them, Vice and Ciro, have their own security company so they've helping keep the place safe. And offer a sponsorship to you guys as well." Colleen:"Ain't that nice of them. That counter is rising nicely." Exile:"Dah, but will it be enough?" Colleen:"Better than bloomin' nothing. Barb, who is who is that pack?" Barbatus nods and points to each wolf. Barbatus:"Those two there are Vice and Ciro. Vice has a mate called Jinx and two pups he adopted when he married her. She isn't here right now but at the hotel: apparently she doesn't like wrestling. Ciro is here with his son Tripper. Jinx and Ciro are my siblings but we have never met and I don't know if Stalker told them yet." Colleen:"You don't say." Barbatus:"I do say. The two teen wolves there are Cal and Fallon. You might like this fact: their father is Hardboot, a wolf now working for the Vanguard." Exile:"You know what Hardboot sees like?" Barbatus:"Sees? Oh, looks. Nah, but the teens would alert us right away if he ever showed his face around here." Hunter:"Say Barb, doesn't the KH Military come around here now and then since you mentioned they're refugees?" Barbatus:"They occassionally harass us, but we manage to keep them away most of the time. I doubt they will show up tonight since the KH has their own problems now with Stalker captured by the Vanguard. But we're still staying on our toes." Hunter:"Good thing, too. We're more worried about the Vanguard dropping in to spoil the show than any of the other villains right now." Barbatus cracks his knuckles. Barbatus:"Let them come. I'm in the mood for a fight tonight." Marvel comes up and taps his wristwatch. Marvel:"Speaking of which, its almost time to begin the show. Time to head down to the lockers to get ready." Barbatus nods. Barbatus:"All right. Show time. You know where your seats are, Hunter?" Hunter:"Yup! I'll take my team there." Barbatus:"Good. Let's go." They all file out of the booth. Down below in the crowd Tanarus and Elexis are looking around the ring. Elexis:"A lot of people here tonight." Tanarus:"Yes. Hopefully this means a lot of money for us." Elexis:"Judging from the counter, that looks to be certain." It was then she spotted a familiar face nearby. She tapped Tanarus' shoulder and pointed. Elexis:"Look over there. Do you see what I see?" Tanarus looks and sees whom Elexis is pointing out. Tanarus:"That's Ciro! I didnt expect to see him here." Elexis gets up. Elexis:"Let's go sit with him. There's still time before the main match starts and I can see some open seats by him." Tanarus nods and gets up. The couple make their way over to where Ciro and the other wolves are sitting. Tanarus makes the intro- duction. Tanarus:"Can a fellow wolf take a seat here?" Ciro looks up at them and smiles. Ciro:"Tanarus! Elexis! I'm surprised to see you two here! Have a seat right behind me." He gestures to a pair of vacant seats behind him. They greet one another. Elexis:"What are you and Vice doing here?" Vice:"Barb hired us to help with the security arrangements for this fight." Elexis:"Oh? I didn't know you guys were friends with Barb." Ciro:"We don't meet that often, but we do share the occassional drink now and then." Tanarus:"Won't your superiors in the KH Military disagree with that kind of fraternizing?" Ciro:"Clutch? Ha! I actually like telling him we are fraternizing with runaways. It tends to get his tail in a twist." Tanarus:"Don't like him, huh?" Vice:"Not after he tried to badmouth us behind our backs. Since then we've pretty much ignoring any orders he gives us." Elexis:"You think he might show up tonight?" Ciro:"Doubt it. Last I heard he went running off to Alaska for some reason. So things should be quiet tonight." Tanarus:"Let's hope so." They continue talking while waiting for the match to begin. Locker Room Caesar's Palace 7:15 PM: This is a row of lockers with a wooden bench in the middle of the room. Adjacent are exits to the showers and the ring. Right now the only ones here is a big, muscular bulldog cano-sapien and his short human manager. The bulldog is listening to his manager. Manager:"You know what to do, right?" Bulldog:"Swing right, dodge, dodge, swing right again." Manager:"Right! And stay on your toes! This Barb guy is real tough." Voice:"Not as tough as me." The bulldog and manager look to the exit. Standing there is Hardboot, wearing boxing shorts and fingerless gloves. Flanking him is a pair of humans dressed in black clothes, black caps and sunglasses and armed with plasma pistols. Hardboot cracks his knuckles. Manager:"Who are you?" Hardboot:"I'm the replacement fighter for this match. You and your mutt are out for the count this time." The bulldog jumps up and walks towards Hardboot with an angry frown on his face. Bulldog:"Now see here!" Hardboot immediately grabs the bulldog and hoists him up in the air. He then spins him around a few times before tossing him into an open locker. He closes the locker. Hardboot:"Yup, I saw." The two Vanguard operatives rush towards the frightened manager and stuff him into another locker. Operative:"Keep your mouth shut or you'll get to eat one of these!" The operative holds the pistol close to the manager's face. The manager nods his head in fear. They close the locker and lock it. Hardboot then uses a communicator in his ear. Hardboot(into com):"This is Boxer. Champion is in the ring." Voice(over com):"Copy that, Boxer. Proceed to centre stage and wait for signal." Hardboot(into com):"Copy. Over and out." Hardboot goes to rummage through the bulldog's wrestling bag while the two operatives keep their eyes open, weapons concealed. Parking Lot Caesar's Palace At That Moment: This is one of the casino's adjacent parking lots, where most of the non- VIPs park their cars. A lone truck and trailer is parked amongst all the civilian vehicles. River, dressed in the same black clothes as Hardboot's operatives, is speaking to two technicians. River:"And once we give the signal, you'll cut all communications and the power, clear?" Technician 1:"Cellular and landlines will be down in a flash, Ma'am." Technician 2:"This place will be darker than a cave once we're done. And we'll make sure they don't get any backup generators running until you're done." River:"Good. Get in the truck and get to work." Technicians:"Yes, Ma'am!" The technicians climb into the truck while River marched towards a group of her own forces. They consist of Vanguards soldiers and a pair of N-Ops. River:"Everyone ready?" Soldiers:"Yes, Ma'am!" River:"Good. Split up and head to your positions, then wait for my signal." The River's team splits up into three equally-sized teams and head towards the casino. Arena Caesar's Palace 7:30 PM: The ring is now fully packed. Each seat is filled with a spectator while the number counter above has grown considerably. Watching from the VIP box above are the Road Rovers. Blitz, Exile and Shag are leaning back and sipping soda, with Shag holding a bucket full of soda with a big straw. Hunter looks at the ring. Hunter:"There's Marvel. It's showtime." Marvel appears in the centre of the ring wearing his best suit. He starts speaking into a head-mounted mike. Marvel:"Ladies and gentlemen of all races and species! Welcome to Caesar's Palace for tonight's big bout! I'd like to thank you all for coming and offering your support to the Road Rovers! Already we have collected close to $5 million dollars and we hope you will open your hearts, and purses, to support one of the finest crime fighting teams in the world! Give yourself a big round of applause!" The crowd applaud for a minute before Marvel raises his paw to silence them. He continues. Marvel:"But we all know why you're here! You're here to see the big champion take on the newcomer! So without delay, here he is: Big Barb!" The crowd applauds again as Barbatus approaches the ring wearing a robe over his boxing gloves and shorts. He takes off the robe and gives it to an assistant. He then gets into the ring before flexing his arms to the delight of many in the crowd. Blitz rolls his eyes. Blitz:"Show off, yah." Exile:"Says you who kiss yourself in shower." Blitz:"That's because I'm big and strong and very pretty." Exile:"Don't be weird boy, Weird Boy." Blitz rolls his eyes again while taking another sip. The crowd settles to let Marvel speak again. Marvel:"And taking on the champion tonight is a newcomer from the Big Apple! New York City's famous Manhattan Masher!" The crowd applauds again, though not as enthusiastically this time. Appearing by the ring is Hardboot. He takes off his robe and gets into the ring. Marvel is surprised when he sees the new challenger. Barb, who is also surprised, leans over to whisper to Marvel. Barbatus:"Is that the Manhattan Masher? I thought he was a dog." Marvel:"He is. I have no idea who this guy is, but the crowd doesn't seem to mind." Barbatus:"I hope he can fight and that my real opponent hasn't gotten the flu. You'd better check the locker rooms once the fight gets started." Marvel nods and resumes speech. Marvel:"Er... yes! So, who will emerge victorious in this ring tonight? Big Barb or the Manhattan Masher? Let's us find out! Let the bout begin!" The crowd applauds. Marvel gets out of the ring and heads for the lockers while the referee climbs in. He goes and stands between Barb and Hardboot. Barbatus is looking suspiciously at Hardboot, who is grinning back at him. In the crowd where the wolf-sapiens are seated, the teen wolves Fallon and Cal see Hardboot and recognise him. Fallon:"Uncle Ciro!" Ciro looks at the teens. Ciro:"Yes? Something up?" Fallon:"Uncle, that wolf in the ring is Hardboot." Ciro's eyes widen. Ciro:"You sure?" Cal:"You bet, Uncle Ciro. I can spot him from miles away. That is definitely him!" Ciro looks again at Hardboot more carefully and recognises him. Ciro:"You're right! Vice, do you see that?" Vice is growling softly while looking at Hardboot. Vice:"I do. How did he get here?" Ciro:"I'd better tell Tanarus and Elexis." Ciro moves over to the coyote couple and points to Hardboot as the bout begins. Ciro:"You see that 'Manhattan Masher'?" Tanarus:"Yes, why?" Ciro:"We know that wolf, and he's not the real Masher. He's Hardboot, the personal bodyguard of Earl Hawkins." Tanarus and Elexis look sharply at Ciro. Elexis:"The Vanguard leader?" Ciro:"Yes, that Hawkins." The couple immediately look back at Hardboot. Barb and Hardboot are circling each other, throwing occassional fake punches at each other. Tanarus gets up. Tanarus:"Stay here with Ciro, Dear. I'm going to go and alert the Rovers to Hardboot." Elexis:"Okay. Be careful, Dear." Tanarus:"Always." He makes his way through the crowd towards the VIP box. Inside the ring Hardboot and Barbatus continue to size each other up. Hardboot grins. Hardboot:"Think you're a big shot, do you?" Hardboot swings a punch, which Barb dodges. Barbatus:"At least I know who I am. I don't know who YOU are." Barbatus throws a punch back, which Hardboot ducks to avoid. Hardboot:"Oh you'll get to know me very good, very soon." Barbatus:"What does that mean?" Hardboot(grinning):"Patience, Grasshopper." Hardboot peers behind Barbatus towards one of the ring entrances. He sees River and two of her squad waiting there. River holds up two fingers to indicate to Hardboot the amount of minutes left before they strike. Hardboot sees this but continues fighting Barb. At the same time Tanarus comes into the VIP booth. Tanarus:"Guys, we got a big problem." The Rovers all turn their attention towards Tanarus. Hunter:"Tanarus! What's up?" Tanarus:"That wolf Barbatus is fighting in the ring is Hardboot!" Exile picks up the fight guide for tonight's bout. Exile:"Hardboot? Neyt, comrade. He is Manhattan Button Masher." Tanarus:"No, that's not him! That's Hardboot and he's Vanguard." This makes everyone sit up alert. Colleen:"You sure, guv?" Tanarus:"Definitely! My friends know this wolf all too well." Hunter:"And is there is one Vanguard..." Blitz:"... there are even more bad Vanguard." Hunter leaps to his feet. Hunter:"Let's get down into the ring, Rovers. I think tonight's fight is going to be a big one." The Rovers quickly get up and rush out of the VIP booth. Down below River's team begins to appear at the entrances, having subdued any security staff who tried to stop them. River is watching the match, occassionally looking at Hardboot. River and Hardboot's eyes meet and River then nods her head. Hardboot nods and looks back at Barb Hardboot(to himself):"Okay. Showtime." Hardboot dodges another swing and, while Barb isn't watching, takes off a small pouch hanging from his belt. When he attacks, he throws the bag open. Out comes a cloud of sand that flies right into Barb's face. Barb yelps, then coughs and rubs his eyes, unable to fight with a face full of sand. Hardboot takes this chance to kick Barb's legs out from under him. Barb falls over and lands hard on the mat. The referee quickly steps between the two fighters. Referee:"Hey! That's a foul!" Hardboot immediately punches the referee and knocks him out cold. This elicits a gasp from the crowd, many of whom stand up in shock from what's going on. Among them are Elexis, Ciro and Vice. Ciro:"Looks like Barb's getting into trouble! We'd better go in and help!" Vice:"I agree!" However, Elexis spots even more trouble. While everyone is distracted by events in the ring, River and her Vanguard squads are entering the arena, some of the soldiers staying behind to block the entrances. Elexis:"Guys! We're about to get even bigger trouble!" Elexis points to the soldiers, who have still not been noticed by the crowds or security. The security guards are climbing into the ring to try and control Hardboot, who is fighting them. Ciro:"Oh crud! This is an attack!" Vice:"Ciro! Get to the ring and alert the guards! I'll try and make sure the inevitable panic doesn't get anyone hurt!" Ciro:"Right!" But already there is trouble. River fires a pistol in the air, which immediately startles everyone into silence. The soldiers aim their weapons at the guards, who surrender upon seeing they are badly out- matched. River rushes up to the stage and shouts. River:"This is an offical raid! Stay in your seats! This party is over!" Hunter and the other Rovers appear in the ring. Hunter shouts back. Hunter:"Hey! This party is invitation-only, buddy! So you lot get out of here!" River points at the Rovers. River:"There they are! Get them!" Right away a fight breaks out between the Rovers, Ciro's group and the Vanguard attackers. Panic spreads and people try to either to get out of the way or force their way past the Vanguard soldiers keeping them in. Suddenly the power goes and the whole ring is thrown into darkness. Pandamonium ensues. Colleen:"Blimey! I can't see a thing!" Blitz can be heard scream. River calls to her squads. River:"Night vision on!" The Vanguard soldiers put on and activate their night vision goggles before resuming the attack. The N-Ops prepare to fire their neu- tralizers at the Rovers to drain their powers. But Hunter quickly takes action. As fast as he can he runs around, his super speed leaving behind a trail of fire that creates enough light for them to see what is going on. Hunter:"I knew those flames would come in handy one day!" With the extra light the Rovers are better able to stand their ground, but the fight soon turns in a riot with all the fighting and the panicked crowds. Tanarus joins up with Elexis and the other wolves, narrowly dodging a beam fired by a neutralizer. Tanarus:"They're blocking the exits! We got to get rid of the soldiers so the civilians can get out of here!" Ciro:"Vice and I will handle them! You guys go for River and Hardboot!" Tanarus:"Good luck and be careful!" They split up. Hunter tries to circle around and create more trails of fire, but an N-Ops manages to catch him in his beam and bring him to a crawl. Hunter falls to his knees. Hunter:"Oh geez, I must be getting out of shape..." With the N-Ops keeping Hunter neutralized, two Vanguard soldiers rush forward and take aim at the golden retriever. Suddenly Colleen appears behind them, jumping high into the air. Colleen:"Andrew Ryan!" The collie kicks both the soldiers out of the way and turns to the N-Ops. The N-Ops, seeing her come for him, quickly switches targets and manages to hit her as well. Colleen collapses to all fours, but Hunter manages to recover quickly and runs for the N-Ops. The soldier tries to refocus on him again, but Hunter dives and tackles him right in the stomach. The N-Ops has the air knocked out of him and falls to the floor. Hunter then adds a punch to the face to keep him down. He looks at Colleen, who is standing up. Hunter:"You okay, Colleen?" Colleen:"Just a little winded, Huntie. Tis all." Hunter:"Cool, and thanks for the help. Let's get back to the fight!" At one of the exits the Vanguard operatives are holding back the panicked crowds by gunpoint. The front civilains are trying to stay back but are pushed forward by the crowds behind them. Ciro and Vice are way at the back. Vice:"We got to clear those soldiers away before someone gets crushed or trampled!" Ciro studies the situation carefully. He looks at the overhang just above the exit where the operatives are standing. He grabs Vice's arms. Vice:"I got an idea! Follow me!" The two of them go into the stands and climb the steps until they come to the path that crosses the overhang. They come to the over- hang itself and grab the railings. Ciro explains the plan to him. Vice:"You think it will work?" Ciro:"I hope so! Unless the crowds really are too frightened, then we'll be in trouble." Vice shrugs. Vice:"Let's give it a try anyway." They both climb onto the railings and over, then dangle from them just out of sight of the operatives. Ciro:"Ready? One!... Two!... Three!!" The two of them push themselves away from the overpass but hold on to the railings. When momentum brings them down, they let go of the railings and drop down. The operatives are caught off guard by the two wolves tumbling right before them and stumble back. The panicked crowds see this as an opportunity and rush forward. Ciro and Vice jump to their feet before they are trampled and attack two of the operatives. The other operatives, alarmed by the surge of people coming towards them, quickly turn around and flee to avoid getting caught in the stampede. Vice and Ciro knock out the operatives they are fighting and press against the walls to avoid the surging crowds. Vice:"Good plan, Ciro! Cutting too close there, though!" Ciro:"It still worked, so I'm not complaining!" Vice(grinning):"Who's complaining?" They head back into the arena, avoiding the crowds. In the ring Hardboot is beating on Barbatus, who is still blinded by the sand in his eyes. Hardboot:"What's the matter, big guy? Something in your eye?!" Exile climbs into the ring. Exile:"Let me show how real Russian fights!" Hardboot looks up at Exile and growls. He gets up. Hardboot:"Okay! Round one!" Hardboot charges for Exile, but Exile immediately fires his ice beams at him. Hardboot gasps and tries to shield himself with his arms. The beams hit and encase his arms in big blocks of ice. Exile:"We Russians fight in winter, comrade." Hardboot, however, gets an idea. He grins and pounds the two blocks together. They are very solid. Hardboot:"Actually, these make great boxing gloves!" Hardboot charges at Exile. The husky jumps out of the just as Hardboot lands a blow on the spot where he was. The ice blocks punch a big hole into the ring floor. Hardboot begins to chase Exile around the ring, preventing the husky from getting a shot off. Blitz comes to the ring and watches the race going on. Blitz:"Oooo, time to try that trick they did in cartoons." Blitz waits until Exile passes, then immediately sticks his arm out into the ring while whistling. Hardboot doesn't see this, tripping on the doberman's arm. Hardboot stumbles over and falls to the floor. The big wolf bangs his head on his frozen arms, both it and the impact from the fall breaking the ice and leaving Hardboot dazed. Blitz grins. Blitz:"Nighty night, naughty wolf." Blitz goes off to fight the other Vanguard soldiers while Exile goes to help Barbatus, who is struggling to get up. River is now fighting Colleen and Hunter at the same time. River is trying to engage Colleen in paw-to-paw, but Hunter keeps harassing her from the sides. The wolfess still manages to stand her ground, but barely. River:"Grrrr! You flea-bitten mongrels!" Colleen:"Speak for yourself, guv!" Colleen kicks for River, but River jumps back. However, Hunter appears right behind her and kneels, causing River to trip and fall over onto the floor. She struggles to her feet. Hunter:"A bit too much for you?" River:"Grrr! You miserb..." Her ears suddenly perk up. Through all the noise she can hear the sound of sirens. The police are on their way. River swears, jumps to her feet and pulls out her radio. River:"All units retreat! Local law enforcement is coming! I repeat, all retreat!" River immediately runs for the exits, as do the Vanguard soldiers, some of them helping their fallen colleagues to their feet. Hunter and Colleen stop and watch the retreat. Hunter:"Guess they're afraid of the fuzz." Colleen:"Ours or the bobbies'?" Hunter:"Hmmm. Good question, maybe I should ask Hubert if he could research that." Colleen rolls her eyes. The two of them then join in the pursuit of the fleeing Vanguard. Elexis climbs into the ring and goes to help Barbatus, who is struggling to sit up while still trying to get the sand out of his eyes. Laboratory Vanguard Complex Unknown Location 9:00 PM: Hawkins is back inside his chamber with scientists working around him on the chamber's computers. While they work, Hawkins is taking a call from River. Hawkins(into com):"You all got away?" River(over com):"Just before the police arrival. We got some injuries, but we're all in the clear." Hawkins(into com):"Good, but what about that fundraising event?" River(over com):"I'm pleased to say we completely crashed the party. We intercepted a few calls between the fundraisers and their funders. Nearly all of them are refusing to give even a cent." Hawkins chuckles. Hawkins(into com):"Excellent work. Return to base, good job!" River(over com):"Thank you, sir. Over and out." Hawkins ends the call and removes the receiver with a grin. Hawkins:"Soon the Road Rovers will be completely broke and dead in the water. And hopefully dead, literally." He chuckles again and relaxes. The scientists just continue with their work around the chamber. Arena Caesar's Palace Las Vegas 09:30 PM: The arena is now cordoned off by the Las Vegas police. Officers are everywhere, looking for evidence and gathering them and marking bullet holes. Some of the investigators are interviewing the Rovers, Barb, Marvel and Ciro's wolves. After the interviews are concluded they all gather to discuss the night's events. Hunter:"What a bummer. All the Vanguard enemies have disappeared without a trace." Marvel:"That's not the only bad news. All our possible investors and sponsors have been completely spooked by the attack and are refusing to donate even a cent." Barbatus:"Come on, Marvel. They can't have all suddenly become weak-kneed. Most of them really want to keep the Road Rovers running." Marvel:"Barb, it is easy for the rich to say that. When it comes to actually being in the daily crossfire that the Rovers face they start to worry about their wellbeing rather than that of our friends." Blitz:"So, does that mean we won't be getting any funds?" Marvel:"Not a cent." The Rovers collectively sigh. Colleen:"Looks like the Vanguard won again. Where are we going to find help now?" Vice and Ciro step forward. Vice:"Look, you guys put in a lot of effort to try and make this fundraiser a success. Maybe Ciro and I can offer you a little bit of help. Barb told us you guys have a manpower shortage." Exile:"Dah. No money to pay everyone, so many comrades were forced to leave for other jobs to pay for bread each day." Ciro:"Well, we decided we're going to move in with you and try to help you out as best we can." Blitz:"You would?" Ciro:"Yeah. Maybe not on missions, but with things like cleaning, security, maintenance, cooking..." Shag licks his lips and yaps in approval. Hunter rubs his chin. Hunter:"Hmmmm. Sure, why not! We can always use a helping paw back at HQ, but we don't have much cash to pay you." Vice grins. Vice:"That's why its called 'volunteer work'." Colleen:"You're willing to help us for free?" Vice:"Of course! At least until you guys can get back on your feet." Hunter:"I'll first have to ask the Master, but I'm pretty certain he will be very glad for the help." Ciro:"All right! We'll get our things together and wait for you guys to come and pick us up." Hunter:"Sure! Where do we rendevouz?" Ciro begins to tell the Rovers where they can be picked up. Marvel is pulled to one side to speak with another police inspector. Vorster Estate Eastern Cape Province South Africa 16 June 05:38 PM: The members of Unit STRIKE are gathered around the table in the dining room, barring Shephard, Merit and Kenya. The room is sparse, but well-kept and the dining table is a polished piece of wood. The plates and cutlery have been set. Corsair looks at Striker. Corsair:"What's for supper, boss?" Striker:"We're going to eat a South African speciality: pap en boerewors." Corsair:"What's that?" Striker:"Porridge and sausages." Corsair:"That's not much." Striker:"We need to be careful with our budget, David. We're low on funds." Phoenix:"Kenya and Shephard are going to make a little extra sides to go with our meals." Corsair:"I guess we just have to accept what is put before us." Illanov:"You wouldn't have survived a day in the Russian army." Corsair:"Bet you miss all that free vodka." Before Illanov can reply Shephard, Kenya, Merit, Maska come in carrying plates of hot food. Kenya:"Supper's up!" Corsair looks at the food. Corsair:"Looks good... and smells good too." Shephard:"Kenya added some nice spices to it. I'm eager to have a taste." Kenya smiles and wags her tail approvingly. Striker looks up at Maska. Striker:"You make the pap en wors, Maska?" Maska:"Just like always, Gerard." Striker:"Dankie, Maska. It looks delicious." Once all the food has been served, everyone takes their seats except for Merit. Merit:"Commencing clean up procedure in kitchen area." Merit leaves while the others say their prayers before they start eating. They begin to eat, but a few minutes in there is the sound of knocking. Everybody looks towards the front door. Phoenix:"Did we invite guests?" Striker:"Maska, did you lock the estate gate?" Maska:"Yes, I did." Maska is about to get up, but Striker jumps to his feet first. Striker:"You stay here, Maska. I'll go look." Phoenix:"You want us to come with you, Strikie?" Striker:"Nee, but just be ready in case something happens." Phoenix:"Be careful, dear." Striker nods. He walks to the front door, but instead of opening the door he bends down to peek through the keyhole. He can see a dark figure just outside. The figure moves closer and knocks again. Figure:"Hello." Striker's eyes widen. Striker:"Can't be..." He unlocks the door and opens it. Standing outside is Shadow, dressed in a black business suit and tie and wearing a cloak over his shoulders. He smiles smugly. Shadow:"Hello, pup." Striker:"Shadow, what are you doing here?" Shadow:"I thought I would pay a visit. Maybe I come in?" Striker frowns, then sighs and steps aside. Striker:"Come in." Shadow steps inside and Striker closes the door. The spaniel then turns to the collie. Striker:"What are you really doing here, Shadow? This cannot be a simple courtesy call." Shadow:"No, it isn't. I've been watching you all struggle without funding from the UN and how your fundraising efforts are being sabotaged by this Vanguard." Striker:"You saw what happened in Las Vegas, it seems." Shadow:"Very pathetic. And you probably haven't got a cent from it either." Striker is getting annoyed. Striker:"Speak your mind, Shadow." Shadow:"Very well. You know about my company, Kia Consortium?" Striker:"Ja, we talked about it before. Why?" Shadow:"I'm thinking that, as a favour to you for helping me set up my new business after that adventure in Western Sahara, Kia Consortium will sponsor the Road Rovers and provide the necessary funds." Striker's eyebrows raise. Striker:"Wag, money?" Shadow:"Plenty of it." Striker:"Legal?" Shadow:"Yes. At least the funds going to the Rovers will be." Striker is mulling it over. Striker:"I'm doubtful about your honesty, Shadow. But we are really pressed for funds and we could use your help." Shadow:"I knew you would." Striker:"However, if you do decide to sponsor us your company will certainly be targeted by the Vanguard." Shadow:"I know, but me and Kia Consortium will not be so easily intimidated by the Vanguard. And if they are foolish to try and fight me, they will discover Kia has teeth to go with the money." Striker thinks it over, then finally nods. Striker:"I'll let you speak with the Master about your sponsor- ship." Shadow grins smugly again. Shadow:"Excellent. Seems we are doing business again." Striker:"Follow me." Striker guides Shadow towards the room where the communications hub is set up. Headline News CNN Centre Atlanta United States of America 21 June 8:00 AM: The news anchor is reading one of the top stories of the hour. Next to her is an imagine of the Road Rovers insignia with a dollar sign alongside it. Anchor:"In a surprising twist, the Road Rovers have managed to secure a significant sponsorship with a major corporation despite the recent bad publicity and funding cuts. Kia Consortium has offered to pay for all staff salaries, bills, maintenance, supplies and equipment as part of a deal that was privately concluded yesterday." The image shifts to footage of the Kia Consortium spokeswoman outside the company's offices in Tokyo. She is wearing a black business dress with sunglasses. Tattoos can just be seen under the collar of her white dress shirt. Spokeswoman:"The CEO of Kia Consortium believes the Road Rovers has plenty of potential that is being wasted and lost due to these funding cuts. Kia is proud to sponsor the Rovers and make the world a better place from hostile forces." The footage ends and the broadcast shifts back to the anchor. Anchor:"However, many enemies of the Road Rovers have voiced their displeasure at Kia's decision. The White House has called Kia's sponsorship 'a detriment to world peace and stability' while the United States Congress passed a resolution by unanimous vote, condemning Kia Consortium. At the United Nations, special envoy Ian McMillian has voiced the dis- pleasure of the world body at Kia Consortium." The image shifts to McMillian standing outside the UN Headquarters in New York, surrounded by dozens of reporters. He looks almost angry. McMillian:"This is a dangerous decision by Kia Consortium. The Road Rovers were denied by the United Nations for a reason and this corporate sponsorship threatens to bring instability to the global community and further enbolden destructive behaviour around the world. Therefore the United Nations is condemning Kia Consortium for its rash behaviour and urge it to reconsider its sponsorship." The image shifts back to the anchor. Anchor:"It remains to be seen what effect this major sponsorship will have on the Road Rovers and whether the organisation can relaunch itself from the setbacks it has suffered during the year." She continues reading the news. The Road Rovers have managed, at the last moment, to secure funding from Kia Consortium and can now struggle back to their feet. But can they regain the trust of the world? How will the Vanguard react to this development? And what will the KH Military do to get their leader back from the Vanguard? THE END
